Third-generation synchrotron X-ray sources such as the Advanced Photon
Source under construction at Argonne National Laboratory will place s
evere heat load demands on the first beamline optical element. A coole
d, inclined double-crystal monochromator is one of the instruments bei
ng developed at the APS to handle these high heat loads while retainin
g the brilliance of the source. Using a modified version of the 1989 V
AX/VMS SHADOW code, we examine the properties of the exit beam for two
inclined double-crystal monochromator geometries.
