Oral administration of an ethanolic extract of Lannea coromandelica (E
LC) demonstrated a dose related antiinflammatory activity (AIA) in car
rageenan and dextran induced oedema and adjuvant induced arthritis in
rats. ELC reduced the pleural exudate volume and inhibited leucocyte m
igration in carrageenan-induced pleurisy in rats. It lacked analgesic,
antipyretic or ulcerogenic effect and failed to exhibit any effect in
cotton pellet granuloma. It did not prolong the gestation period, par
turition time in pregnant rats or the onset time of diarrhoea in rats
induced by castor oil. The ALD(50) is greater than 2 g/kg p.o. in mice
.
