A SEM-study of seven marine and brackish-water species of Centrohelioz
oa from Kandalaksha Bay of the White Sea is carried out. These are: He
terophrys marina Hertwig & Lesser, Cienkowskya mereschkowskyi (Cienk.)
, Raphidiophrys marina Ostenfeld, R. pedunculata sp. n., Choanocystis
kareliensis sp. n., C. pelagica (Ostenfeld) and Acanthocystis saphonov
i sp. n. C. kareliensis is characterized by dumb-bell-shaped lamellar
scales with well-developed medial constrictions and straight spicules
with acute apices lacking apical teeth. A. saphonovi is characterized
by bean-shaped lamellar scales and straight cylindrical spicules each
with a spiral rib extending from the base-plate to the apex and bearin
g numerous minute denticles; slightly dilated apices of spicules bear
10 to 15 marginal teeth. R. pedunculata is the second known stalked ce
ntroheliozoon; it has two types of scales: short ones, ca. 8x1 mcm (on
the cell body and base of the stalk) and long ones, ca. 17x1 mcm (on
the medial part of the stalk); both types of scales have smooth factur
