Ma. Naumenko et al., INVESTIGATIONS OF THE HYDROBIOLOGICAL SITUATION IN LAKE ONEGA USING JOINT SPACEBORNE RADAR, AIRBORNE AND IN-SITU MEASUREMENTS, International journal of remote sensing, 15(10), 1994, pp. 2039-2049
The results of the first comprehensive limnological experiment conduct
ed in Lake Onega in the summer of 1989 are presented. The concurrent s
paceborne observations (Cosmos-1870 SAR), airborne surveys (visual obs
ervations and IR radiometry), and shipborne observations (visual obser
vations, thermal and optical water characteristics), made it possible
to establish the presence of vast regions of phytoplankton in the lake
. It is shown that the activity of phytoplankton may change water surf
ace conditions, thus causing strong radar signal contrasts.
