Abstract
It is shown that the Vlasov-Poisson system of equations admits a self- consistent stationary solution in the form of a standing density cavit y. The latter should account for the electrostatic rarefactive solitar y structure that has been recently observed by the Freja satellite in the auroral zone of the upper ionosphere.
