I. Cermak et al., JUDGING OTHERS ACCORDING TO YOURSELF .2. INTERPERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS OF PERSONALITY AND THE STRUCTURE OF INTERPERSONAL ATTRIBUTIONS, Studia psychologica, 35(2), 1993, pp. 185-191
The authors analyze the influence of self on social perception. They p
resume that the dimension of one's own personality determines the ease
with which one uses a certain construct in describing social environm
ent as well as the structure of social attributions. Furthermore, they
expect that the structuring of social attributions is influenced by l
anguage means used in personality descriptions and devote their attent
ion to adjectives and verbs. Students from the Brno high-schools parti
cipated in this study. Using the Interpersonal diagnosis test the stud
ents were divided into subgroups according to the following dimensions
: hostility-affiliation and dominance-submission. Using assessment sca
les the subjects were to evaluate their own interpersonal characterist
ics and behavior expressed by adjectives or verbs, as well as the char
acteristics and behavior of their social environment. Factor analysis
was used for analyzing the structure of interpersonal attributions. Th
e results confirm the expectations that interpersonal characteristics
of the observer have a structuring influence on social attributions an
d, moreover, this influence differs depending on various language mean
s.
