The structure of the PO32- radical is examined by ESR spectroscopy in
gamma-irradiated betaine phosphite. The ESR spectra of the PO32- radic
al indicate two phase transitions of betaine phosphite at T(c1) = 355
K and T(c2) = 216 K. The symmetry of the ESR spectra of the PO32- cent
er in the paraelastic, antiferrodistortive, and ferroelectric phases o
f betaine phosphite is in accordance with the space groups P2(1)/m, P2
(1)/c, and P2(1).
