Direct observation of 160 patients (in acute period of the disease and
within 10-year followup), examination of 220 case records and neuroan
atomic study of 37 cases were performed to study nervous system in pat
ients suffered from hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome. Severe, per
sistent and widespread neurological symptoms were described as well as
mnestic-intellectual disturbances. The latter were defined as encepha
lopathic syndrome with pronounced neurological deficit. The anatomic s
tudy (light and electron microscopy) revealed dystrophic alterations o
f nervous tissue as well as viruses and virus-like substance in many r
egions of the brain. The authors suppose that direct viral action was
the reason for tissue damages of nervous system. The viral penetration
through hematoencephalic barrier was not exluded either.
