Abstract
The authors describe a particularly serious case of pseudomembranous c olitis due to Clostridium difficile that was complicated by toxic mega colon. It was resolved by surgical intervention, and the reasons why s ubtotal colectomy is preferable to simple ileostomy are discussed.
