This pilot project was designed to develop and test a method for deter
mining whether or not DAPPOR, a computer-assisted instruction (CAI) dr
ill program, and a print drill program produce a measurable difference
in test scores of students learning the DIALOG command language. A sa
mple of seven subjects, comprising a CAI drill program group, a print
drill group, and control group participated in the study. Prior instru
ction was given to the three groups. The CAI and print drill groups re
ceived further drill practice on CAI and print formats, respectively.
No reinforcement drill practice was given to the control group. Pilot
study results showed that the CAI group scored highest, the print dril
l group scored second-highest, and the control group scored lowest. Hy
potheses, variable, and methods of data analysis for full-scale resear
ch are presented. Suggestions and recommendations for modifying and up
dating the DAPPOR drill program are provided.
