It was found that curves of annual dynamics for biomass of the White S
ea phytoplankton possess properties of self-similarity. These properti
es were analyzed with the help of fractal/multifractal theory. As a re
sult, sharp distinctions between periods of phytoplankton bloom and ot
her seasons were established. Besides that, it was discovered that tem
poral variability in the surface layer reveals itself better for large
time intervals than for short ones whereas there is the reverse situa
tion in the layers of 10 and 25 m. Such phenomenon was found for the f
irst time. All the above points on a non-linear character of the phyto
plankton communities dynamics and on perspectives of multifractal anal
ysis in biooceanological studies.
