With growing realization of the importance of considering the relative
social positioning of both men and women in developing planning, ther
e is a shift from the narrow 'Women in Development' approach to the br
oad gender approach. This paper, therefore, begins with an examination
of the gender roles including reproductive, productive and community
management activities. Establishing that men and women have differenti
al gender roles, the concept of practical and strategic gender needs a
re defined and illustrated. This follows outlining a framework for gen
der analysis and examining its various components like activity analys
is, resource analysis, benefits analysis, inclusion analysis and socia
l sustainability analysis. How these five components provide basis for
designing and implementing projects that can benefit women and benefi
t by women's participation are also shown through an inventory of proj
ect cycle adaptation parameters.
