Abstract
We have prepared rutile TiO2(110) surfaces that are atomically flat ov er large areas as shown by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). We hav e obtained atomic resolution images of TiO2(110) where the (1 x 1) str ucture is found to cover all of the observed areas on the sample. In s ome cases, we also observe an elongated defect structure oriented alon g the [001] direction. We discuss geometric and electronic properties of models for the clean and defective surfaces which can be used to ex plain the observed STM images.
