Abstract
An improved procedure for the synthesis of 6-chloro-2,2'-bipyridyl fro m 2,2'-bipyridine is described. Treatment of this compound with LiPPh2 leads to the formation of the new, potentially binucleating tridentat e ligand, 6-diphenylphosphino-2,2'-bipyridyl. The spectroscopic proper ties of this ligand and its molecular structure, as established by X-r ay crystallography, are described.
