The structure of poly(oxy-2,dimethyl-1,4-phenylene) (PPE) was studied
by H-1 NMR spectroscopic analysis. Several compounds were prepared in
order to compare their NMR spectra to PPE's. The structure of PPE was
composed of a unit of 2,6-dimethylphenol (DMP) which is synthesized by
the head-to-tail polymerization. The structure made by branched react
ion or Fries-type rearrangement was not observed. Dibutylamino groups
were recognized in the polymer structure and their H-1 NMR signals wer
e observed in the range of 1.3 ppm to 2.3 ppm. The amine structure was
introduced into the polymer at the polymerization.
