The CD19, CD20 and CD22 genes encode transmembrane proteins that are o
f vital importance to B-cell function. Similar to the immunoglobulin (
Ig) genes, they are expressed in a lineage-specific and developmentall
y regulated manner. Here, John Kehrl and colleagues describe how an un
derstanding of the transcriptional regulation of the CD19, CD20 and CD
22 genes is leading to valuable insights into some of the important mo
lecular events that occur in B-cell development and differentiation.
