Abstract
A half-wave plate sandwiched between two quarter-wave plates (a QHQ) m ay be used as a variable linear retarder. We describe some new feature s of the optical properties of such a device and present results of an experimental demonstration of a ferroelectric liquid crystal phase-on ly modulator based on the above principle.
