We have used the CCD X-ray spectrometers on ASCA and resolved the X-ra
y emission line from the jet of SS 433 both into Doppler-shifted compo
nents with two distinct velocities, and into emission from different i
onization states of iron, i.e., FeXXV and FeXXVI. This is the first di
rect detection of the two Doppler shifted beams in the X-ray spectra o
f SS 433 and allows the radial velocity of the jet along the line of s
ight to be determined with an accuracy comparable to the optical spect
roscopy. We also found pairs of emission lines from other atomic speci
es, such as ionized silicon and sulfur, with the Doppler shifts consis
tent with each other. This confirms the origin of the X-ray emission i
n the high temperature plasma in the jets.
