Since its opening in the Neogene the Bering Strait appeared at least 6
times. The most long-lasting epoch of its existence were the Pliocene
one. The latest (post-glacial) opening of the strait caused by glacia
l eustatic sea level increase consisted of several successive stages:
opening of the Bering Strait, the Anadyr Strait and the Shpanberg Stra
it. The size of the strait reached its maximum during the Holocene opt
imum, while the modern water circulation started about 3 - 2 thousand
years ago.
