Excitation of symmetrical elastic waves by a laser beam is investigate
d theoretically and experimentally. Excitation of plane and axisymmetr
ic waves is studied. The relation between elastic displacements and la
ser irradiation power is obtained for harmonic and pulse regime of exc
itation. The efficiency of the Lemb waves excitation is found for diff
erent modes. It is shown that efficiency of excitation may be controll
ed by varying crossection of a laser beam. Experimental data are in go
od agreement with theoretical calculation made for excitation of plate
s by pulse laser irradiation.
