Aspects of the precision forging straight and helical spur gears inclu
ding die design, preform design, dimensional accuracy of tooth forms,
forging loads and ejection problems are reviewed. The effect of gear g
eometry and process variables on forging pressure and ejection load ar
e discussed. Based upon results of experiments performed by the author
s and a literature review, proposals are made for designing preforms f
or precision forging simple and compound straight and helical spur gea
rs. Experimentally obtained traces of forged teeth are compared with t
heoretical profiles of the corresponding die and final forging.
