Pilot-plant scale pulping and sheet making experiments using oil palm
(Elaeis guaineensis) fronds as a raw material have been made. Paper fo
r corrugating medium was prepared successfully using a chemi-thermomec
hanical (CTM) pulping process with an alkali pretreatment. Corrugating
medium and corrugated boards from rolled paper satisfied the standard
s. Production of printing paper also was tried in the same plant using
semi-bleached CTM pulp with a mixture of commercial softwood bleached
kraft pulp (NBKP), and supplied us with printable paper of moderate s
trength and the characteristic color of the material.
