The relationship between size and geographic locality of the host Peum
us boldus with the patterns of distribution and abundance of mistletoe
s Notanthera heterophylla, as well as the effects of mistletoes on gro
wth and health of host branches are analyzed. The geographic locality
and host size are relevant sources to explain the variation in distrib
ution and abundance of mistletoes. Large trees have more mistletoes th
an bushes. The growth in length of infected branches and those with ev
idence of past infections is lower than branches apparently having nev
er been infected. A relation between the abundance of evidence of infe
ction and the degree and health state of the host branch was found.
