Jo. Adegbehin et Je. Omijeh, A SURVEY OF FUEL WOOD CONSUMPTION AND ALTERNATIVE SOURCES OF DOMESTICENERGY IN KADUNA STATE OF NIGERIA, Discovery and innovation, 6(2), 1994, pp. 166-175
The increasing rate of deforestation due to fuel wood extraction has b
een an area of great concern in Kaduna state of Nigeria. Deforestation
leads to a chain of adverse effects such as environmental degradation
and decreasing soil fertility resulting in reduction of agricultural
productivity. This paper examines the level of consumption of differen
t fuel types in Kaduna. Firewood was the most highly consumed, account
ing for about 82.0% of the estimated total heat of energy of 10(4) meg
ajoules consumed per person per year in the State. Measures through wh
ich domestic energy needs of the State as well as that of the country
could be met while at the same time minimizing the rate of deforestati
on are also discussed.
