Abstract
The pairing state of the cuprate superconductors is a key issue in und erstanding experiments and in clarifying possible mechanisms. A wide r ange of experiments now show that the gap function is predominantly d( x2-y2) in character. Here we discuss the relevant experiments, especia lly focusing on those which provide constraints on possible mixed pair ing states, such as s + d and s + id.
