The electronic structure of Gd(Al1-xCo(x))2 compounds for Co concentra
tions x = 0.0, 0.05, 0.1, 1.0 was investigated by X-ray photoelectron
spectroscopy. An energetic shift of the Gd 4f majority spin peak on do
ping with Co is not detectable. The shape of the occupied Co 3d valenc
e band near the Fermi level in pure GdCo2 is in good agreement with ca
lculations of the density of states for paramagnetic YbCo2 from the li
terature. Slight discrepancies between experiment and theory can be at
tributed to the intrinsic magnetism of the Co sublattice in GdCo2.
