Measurements of the thermal diffusivity and conductivity, heat capacit
y, absorption and extinction coefficients, refractive indices, and den
sities have been derived for slag films taken from the continuous cast
ing mould. These data have been used to analyse the mechanism for heat
transfer between the steel strand and the mould. It is shown that con
tributions from radiation conduction are unlikely to exceed 10% of tho
se derived from lattice thermal conduction. The main factor affecting
the radiation conduction was found to be the crystallinity developed i
n the slag film and not the pickup of transition metal oxides by the s
lag during casting.
