Varicose veins are superficial vessels that are abnormally twisted, le ngthened, or dilated and are usually caused by inefficient or defectiv e valves within the vein. They represent a medical condition accompani ed by symptoms deserving treatment. Varicose veins are a manifestation of venous disease that may precede later severe complications. Varico sities cause cutaneous disease in addition to complications specific t o the venous system. This article reviews the epidemiology, adverse se quelae, anatomy, pathophysiology, evaluation, and treatment of varicos e veins.
