Varicose veins are superficial vessels that are abnormally twisted, le
ngthened, or dilated and are usually caused by inefficient or defectiv
e valves within the vein. They represent a medical condition accompani
ed by symptoms deserving treatment. Varicose veins are a manifestation
of venous disease that may precede later severe complications. Varico
sities cause cutaneous disease in addition to complications specific t
o the venous system. This article reviews the epidemiology, adverse se
quelae, anatomy, pathophysiology, evaluation, and treatment of varicos
e veins.
