Twenty species of rotifers of the genus Lecane were found in inland fr
esh and brackish waterbodies of the Balearic archipelago L. margalefi
n. sp. has been found in a semi-arid area of Majorca island, and it is
probably endemic. It is an illoricate species related to the L. luna
group by its foot morphology, but similar in shape and size to L. boor
ali Koste & Shiel. The taxonomy of some other species of the genus, re
corded from the archipelago, is discussed (L. bifurca (Bryce), L. gran
dis (Murray), L. lamellata (Daday), L. latissima Yamamoto, L. ohioensi
s (Herrick), L. punctata (Murray), L. pyriformis (Daday)).
