On locally developed surveys, community college respondents indicated
academic and personal concerns prior to and after transferring to a fo
ur-year college and compared their two-year and four-year colleges in
six academic skill areas. Respondents reported that the level of overa
ll instruction and the use of the library were about the same at both
types of institutions. While the level of abstract thinking and the am
ount of reading required were greater at four-year institutions, more
written work was required at the community colleges. Finally, responde
nts received more personal attention from community college faculty th
an from faculty at four-year colleges.
