A study of the optical conductivity spectra of high-T-c cuprates with
c-axis polarization elucidates the evolution of superconducting gap wi
th doping. The results are consistent with the d-wave gap in the clean
limit superconductivity in the CuO2 plane which couples with the adja
cent planes via Josephson, effect. It is suggested that the maximum of
the d-wave gap is large (2 Delta(0) similar to 400 cm(-1)) and it is
independent of doping and material.
