Extracellular levels of serotonin (5-HT) and 5-hydroxyindolacetic acid
(5-HIAA) were measured in the medial pontine reticular formation of a
cute decerebrate cats. The mean basal levels of 5-HT and 5-HIAA were 2
6 fmol/20 mu l and 15 pmol/20 mu l. Perfusion of the dialysis probe wi
th high K+ and Ca2+-free Ringer solution for 60 min resulted in 4.8-8.
5 x increase and 25-48% decrease in the extracellular levels of 5-HT,
respectively, in comparison to the basal 5-HT levels. Perfusion with T
TX-added Rinaer solution for 60 min resulted in a consistent decrease
in the extracellular levels of 5-HT.
