An improved method for the determination of plutonium in the environme
nt was developed, in which TOPO extraction and a parallel grid ionizat
ion Chamber alpha-spectrometer are used to determine Pu-239+240 and Pu
-238 in soil and grass. The chemical recoveries are 72% and 97%, respe
ctively. Good agreement is obtained with the analysis of reference mat
erials from IAEA and NIST. The detection limit of the procedure is 4
10(-2) Bq/kg. It is a simple and rapid method for environmental measu
rements suitable for emergency analysis in the case of a nuclear accid
ent.
