PIXE ANALYSIS OF BYZANTINE CERAMICS

PIXE analyses have been performed on byzantine and hellenistic ceramic s excavated at Pergame (Turkey). As local production is attested, the study intends to propose a new referential among the few kiln sites wh ich have been analyzed in the framework of economic and cultural excha nges in the byzantine world. Elemental concentrations were determined by a method which combines the advantages of the external standard met hod and the independence from integrated charge measurements through n ormalization to 100% oxides. Statistical treatments of results disting uished a byzantine local group, an hellenistic local group and a group of byzantine ceramics of a higher technological level.
