Lagoons and activated sludge treatment systems in pulp and paper mills
commonly face shock loads containing complex mixes of toxic and non-t
oxic compounds. Little investigation of how these treatment systems re
spond to complex shock loads has been made. A laboratory-scale study,
conducted with kraft mill effluents showed that an activated sludge sy
stem tended to provide better resistance to the shocks than lagoons op
erated at comparable solids retention times, especially for severe sho
cks.
