Carcinoid tumors of the colon are a rare cause of colonic malignant di
sease. A case of carcinoid tumor of the sigmoid colon is presented tha
t illustrates the indolent course of this type of tumor. The case pres
ented highlights the clinicopathologic features of carcinoid tumors of
hindgut origin, including advanced local and widely metastatic diseas
e at the time of diagnosis in the absence of symptoms of the carcinoid
syndrome. The diagnosis and management of gastrointestinal carcinoid
tumors are reviewed.
