Three fields of scientific inquiry are juxtaposed in the light of a co
mmon question. Do there in general exist two kinds of language, one 'p
ersonal' and the other 'autistic'? This question goes back to a findin
g of Fraiberg and Lenneberg. It appears to be fruitful, (a) in the con
text of understanding ape language, (b) in the context of symbolic int
eractionism, and (c) in the context of understanding the qualitative b
ehavior of coupled autonomous optimizers, that is, a class of artifici
al brains.
