The adsorption of phenol and 4-chlorophenol on oxides in aqueous solut
ions is strongly influenced by the cationic surfactant hexadecyltrimet
hylammonium chloride. At surfactant concentrations below the CMC, stro
ng synergistic interaction effects on the adsorption are observed, whe
reas above the CMC, solubilisation of the phenols in micelles becomes
an important competing effect. An approach is described for calculatin
g the partition coefficients of the phenols between the bulk phase, th
e surface and the micelles.
