An atypical oral presentation of herpes simplex virus infection in a 4
9-year-old woman after orthotopic liver transplantation is reported. C
linically, the differential diagnosis included chronic hyperplastic ca
ndidiasis, nodular leukoplakia of undetermined etiology, and malignant
neoplasm. An excisional biopsy revealed herpesvirus infection, and im
munoperoxidase staining confirmed herpes simplex virus infection. This
report describes the clinical and histologic appearance of these lesi
ons and the course and treatment of the patient.
