An optimal design of an unstayed polemast on a naval ship under wind a
nd sea loads is considered in this paper with constraints on buckling
strength, yielding strength, and deflection. This design problem has b
een formulated as a non-linear constrained minimization problem, havin
g been solved through using an interior penalty function method. The r
esults of an optimal design from one actual ship have been presented,
with its design having been seen to be more economical as put in compa
rison with the prototype design.
