Pv. Rao et B. Ramamoorthy, A METHOD OF ESTIMATING THE STRENGTH OF INTERFERENCE FITTED ASSEMBLIESUSING MODELING TECHNIQUES, INDIAN JOURNAL OF ENGINEERING AND MATERIALS SCIENCES, 1(2), 1994, pp. 77-83
The static strength of interference fitted assemblies has been assesse
d using an Universal Testing Machine by conducting experiments for hea
t treated components under varied conditions. A significant improvemen
t in strength is observed by soaking the assemblies at elevated temper
atures. As there are many factors that influence the static load beari
ng ability, a suitable design of experiments has been planned and perf
ormed varying selected parameters. An attempt is made to develop a rel
ation for evaluating the strength by fitting an equation using statist
ical regression methods. This equation is the improved version over th
e Lame's formula for evaluating the strength and is developed by compa
ring the experimental results. Of the two methods used for this purpos
e namely log-linear regression analysis and group method of data handl
ing technique, the later method is found to be comparable to the exper
imental results in estimating the load carrying capacity as it makes u
se of self-organising methods. This method is particularly suitable to
this problem as it involves large number of parameters.
