The refractive index of lyotropic lamellar liquid crystal, swollen by
brine, is investigated using Michelson interferometry. The index varia
tion with the volume fraction of dilution is linear. This result is di
scussed to determine an index characterising the dry lamellae and then
to deduce the repeating distance of lamellar ordering. Our results ar
e in good agreement with X-ray and neutron scattering measurements.
