Based on analogies between electromagnetics and quantum mechanics, we
introduce a method to calculate the electronic subband structure in fi
nite-barrier quantum wires of arbitrary shape. Our method is computati
onally simple, and results are in satisfactory agreement with both mai
nframe computer solutions and with analytical results for finite-barri
er systems, which are introduced here.
