S. Subramaniyam et al., FLOW INVESTIGATIONS IN OPEN AND SWIRL COMBUSTION-CHAMBERS OF IC ENGINES - A COMPARISON, INDIAN JOURNAL OF ENGINEERING AND MATERIALS SCIENCES, 1(1), 1994, pp. 26-34
Flow parameters such as mean velocity and turbulent fluctuating veloci
ty have been studied both in a swirl and open combustion chambers of a
diesel engine using a constant temperature hot-wire anemometer under
motoring conditions. The nature of now field activity is very differen
t in both these types of chambers. A vigorous now field activity has b
een observed in swirl chamber during compression and an opposite effec
t was noticed in open combustion chamber. Large mean velocity was meas
ured at some locations (more than 100 m/s) in the swirl chamber during
the last part of the compression stroke. Similar to swirl-squish inte
raction. in open chamber, a swirl-cross now interaction was noticed in
swirl chamber. The effect of speed and compression ratio on flow para
meters has been studied in both types of chambers.
