Abstract
The effective group indices of different single mode fiber types (stan dard, dispersion shifted or dispersion compensated, polarization maint aining, pure silica core, erbium doped) have been measured in the wave length range 1.500-1.580 mum; their values range from 1.4635 to 1.4778 at 1.54 mum. These values have been determined by a resonant-cavity m ethod, which provides an accuracy to the fourth decimal place.
