Bovine cutaneous papillomatosis, a viral infection, causes benign grow
th from the dermis. Conventional treatment involves vaccination using
a species-specific autogenous vaccine. There was regression of the pap
illomas in the naturally infected calves after vaccination with specie
s-specific autogenous vaccine 4 months later in one farm. A complete r
egression of the warts occurred with individual bovine-specific autoge
nous vaccine. This could he due to the presence of antigenic variants
immunologically distinct from the parent virus. thus requiring the nee
d to use wan samples from each individual affected calf to prepare the
individual bovine specific autogenous vaccine. These field variants w
ill greatly complicate the treatment and the management of this diseas
e due to the enormous work involved in the production of individual bo
vine-specific autogenous vaccine.
