The study of the interfacial reactions between carbon fibres and alumi
nium has been performed using a mass spectrometer. Analysis of the gas
eous species evolved by the fibres during heat treatment show that int
erfacial reactions occur between some of these gases and aluminium. Th
e products of these reactions are aluminium carbide and aluminium oxid
es. The aluminium carbide produced during heat treatment has been quan
titatively measured by determining the amount of methane produced upon
the hydrolysis of the carbide.
