Al matrix composites reinforced by 10 vol.% Al2O3 and SiC particles we
re subjected to dry sliding tests against steel using a slider-on-cyli
nder tribometer. Damage mechanisms were 'micro-machining' of the steel
carried out by ceramic particles, plastic deformation and oxidation o
f the metal matrix, as well as abrasion. The results were discussed on
the basis of the third-body wear model.
