Abstract
Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry is used to show that Sc(CD3)(2)+ reacts with saturated alkanes larger than ethan e in the gas phase by a four center a-bond metathesis reaction, with m ethane elimination. These processes are facile at room temperature, in volve little or no activation enery, and occur preferentially with pri mary carbon-hydrogen. bonds.
