M. Olteanu et al., EFFECT OF ADDITIVES ON SOME PHYSICOCHEMICAL PROPERTIES OF CRYOLITE-ALUMINA MELTS .1. INFLUENCE OF LIF ADDITIONS, Revue Roumaine de Chimie, 39(6), 1994, pp. 673-679
For a better characterization of a lower melting electrolyte suitable
for operating at around 940-degrees-C the density, viscosity and elect
rical conductivity of a cryolite base melt of CR = 2.35 with 2.5 wt% A
l2O3 and 5 wt% CaF2 were investigated. The influence of LiF, added to
compensate the drop in electrical conductivity, was also studied. The
experimental data for the three investigated properties were fitted to
equations either for temperature dependence within each composition o
r for simultaneous dependence on temperature and LiF concentration. Th
e improvement in bath operation was discussed in terms of the obtained
data and an optimal addition of 3 wt% LiF was recommended.
